Vocaloid Song Review #1

Rolling Girl (Sung by: Miku Hatsune)(Utauloid Version by:kyaami)

English Translation:

For lonely girls, it's always the same, dreaming dreams that don't come true
And churning, churning through the clamor in their heads

A lonely girl mutters "I'm fine", have words failed her?
A failure, a failure.
Obsessing over her mistakes makes everything spin again!

One more time, one more time
"I'll roll along again today"
The girl said, the girl said
Breathing life into the words!

"How about now?"

"Not yet, we still can't see what's ahead. Hold your breath, now."

This is how it ends for a Rolling Girl, unable to reach the colors on the other side
The overlapping voices, they blend together, blend together

She mutters, "I'm fine.", but the words fail her
Not caring how it ends
An upward climb that invites mistakes

One more time, one more time
Please, get me rolling
The girl said, the girl said
With her intense silence!

"How about now?"

"Just a little more, we should see something soon. Hold your breath, now."

One more time, one more time
"I'll roll along again today"
The girl said, the girl said
Breathing laughter into the words!

"How about now? OK, you can look. You must be exhausted too, right?"

Stop breathing, now.

I love this song. Not only have I related to it but it describes my entire life. There is no official meaning behind the lyrics so fans are able to come up with their own theories and such. I decided to place Mawarine Shuu's version too. Despite being a Utauloid his voice is pretty smooth.

The theme of the song is depression. A girl who is always described as 'rolling' is a way of saying that she's suffering from depression. For those who have not experienced this, depression comes in many ways of pain. It's either from the chest or the head, sometimes it's both. In this case we're shown that it's the head case. I for once have experienced both pains but never two at the same time. It really feels as if the world is spinning. As if everything was in chaos while you're rummaging in your head on what to do.

It's almost like when fear overcomes you. It blocks any other feeling and takes over your mind. When we're talking about this type of depression, it's most likely that the person will start becoming a little hysterical. In the original video we see the girl is accompanied by a boy. This boy may represent her subconsciousness that was with her since the beginning. During the video we see the girl attempting to commit suicide several times by 'rolling' which will obviously leave a few scratches. But the picture shown after her 'rolling' is a miserable beaten up girl. We can say that she was bullied but there's no real proof to that.

We can't say that the boy is actually a childhood friend of hers. He was shown to have no reactions to her 'rolling' or her self inflicted injuries. If a friend would see those their common reaction is be worried and care for the girl. But in the video he just stands there as he watches the girl raising her hand only to ask him if she could 'roll' again. What proves my theory right is that he actually encourages her to commit suicide in the end the line: "Stop breathing, now." looked as if it was suggested by the boy. He had seen her chocking either him or herself. Which leads to my conclusion that he has grown tired of watching the girl 'roll' and suggested to "Stop breathing" was also like saying "Hang yourself". In the ending picture we see the limp (and probably lifeless) body of the girl in the boy's arms.

  1. Thanks for writing about various topics... because anime fans have taken most of my time reading about terms and story lines that I do not have any affinity to. (No offense) However, I find the anime world very fascinating.
